Old School Photography

"What is the difference between a professional and armature photographer?"
"Professionals keep your pictures forcing you to ask them for reprints at outrageous prices." They take away your right to copy the pictures they took of you forcing repeat business with them.  That is just wrong.

why is the old photography business model the way it is?
photographers use to have darkrooms and do their own developing, printing and copying.  those darkrooms are all but gone now but the model they use is still in place which is a rip off cause they are not doing the work but still getting the money by making you think they are.

what is the difference between film and digital?

why do they keep my negatives?
Film requires time and skill to make a print from a negative so the studio kept them cause they were the only ones who could do anything with them.  not the case any more.

why so much for a reprint after the initial order?
it took time and effort to pull the negative and go into the dark room and make a copy. that is why package deals and limited posed were used.  it is also why they charge $50 for an 8x10 and still get away with it when they too are shooting digital now.  now it's pull the archive CD, find the file, upload it to a photo lab and it's shipped directly to the customer in a week.

why do pros charge so much, take so long to set up a shot, limit number of poses.
A: "they use film not digital technology and charge by the hour."

Q: "why do they only offer standard print packages with prints I don't want"
A: cause it is specificlly designed to force you to buy a bigger package by leaving out things you really need in the smaller ones.

Q: "why cant they capture high speed events like a motorcycle run."

Q: " why does it take them weeks and weeks to get results.

why real photos and not ink jets.?

why not print on site and save time and money.?

those two questions go hand in hand and the answer is simple,  QUALITY.   we deliver a quality product, ink jet prints fade and will run when they get wet or sweated on as one person  complained early on that a print he bought and put in his shirt to take home due to lack of saddle bags, left a tattoo on  his belly due to sweating on the print and having it run while in his shirt.  he had a good humor and it came off eventually but it was decided then that real photos will be the only thing that Phat Ratt will deliver, no matter what.
now there are 4 part separation printers out there for about 2000 bucks which may be used in the future for big rallies but that is still a big investment and will have to be justified in volume sales some day.
